These kits can give results in about 20 minutes. The test kits have already been tried at the ESIC hospital and the results are encouraging. The test kits are Reverse Tranion Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR)-free and get rid of many processes. The cost of COVID testing with these IIT-H BioChips will be around Rs 600 and can be almost halved in case of mass production of the chips. A patent has been filed for the test kit.

The testing kit has been developed by a team led by Prof Shiv Govind Singh, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Hyderabad. Dr Suryasnata Tripathy, a postdoctoral fellow, Ms Patta Supraja, a fourth-year doctoral student and other students from Prof Shiv Govind Singh’s Research Team, institute faculty and funding agencies supported this project.

IIT-Hyderabad is the second academic institution in the country to come up with a testing kit for novel coronavirus. IIT-Delhi became the first academic institute to have obtained the ICMR approval for a real-time PCR-based diagnostic assay.
